Topic Radioactive Material – A Review of Safety, Security and Incidents

Mr. Stephan Brown, Radiation Health Physicist 2 at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) will provide a brief review of radioactive material (RAM) regulations. Mr. Brown will further discuss how the State and Federal programs are organized and generally where they are used. He will share how the state plans for and responds to various events including security and emergency situations, including how they interact with other agencies and jurisdictions.

This interactive presentation will showcase various radiation detection and survey equipment and there will be an opportunity for hands on use and demonstrations.  Low activity radioactive sources will be present for demonstration purposes.

Speaker Stephan Brown

Stephan Brown is a Radiation Health Physicist 2 at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP). He is from Philadelphia, PA and attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he obtained a B.S. in Chemistry. He worked for Chevron, USA – Philadelphia Refinery, in South Philadelphia for one year. The refinery was last known as Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES).

In 1992, he joined the PA DEP where he worked in the Storage Tank Program for 16.5 years. In 2008, Stephan transferred to the PA DEP Radiation Protection Program. Both program areas of his job responsibilities included conducting inspections, investigations, and responses.  Since 1994, he has also been a part of the PA DEP Emergency Response Team, who responds to incidents involving all department programs. In 2002, Stephan enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) and retired in 2023 as a lieutenant. Two notable USCG responses he assisted with were Hurricane Katrina and Deepwater Horizon’s In-Situ Burn Group where he was a safety officer and later as a Task Force Leader (TFLD). He is passionate about educating the public at schools and events on hazardous materials and talking about their effects on humans and the environment.

Webinar will be simulcast free to registered participants. We encourage in-person attendance due to the interactive and hands-on demonstrations in this presentation.
