“Selling Safety in Your Organization”
by Patrick J. Karol, CSP, SMP, CIT
Selling Safety in Your Organization shows how combining technical expertise with soft skills builds influence beyond compliance. Participants will learn three components of selling safety—vision, knowledge, and heart—along with practical tools like the Make Safety Personal conversation. The result: stronger connections, proactive employees, and a lasting safety culture.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate strategies to influence employee behavior and management decisions.
- Explain the three key components of selling safety: Vision, Knowledge, and Heart.
- Use the Make Safety Personal worksheet to strengthen safety conversations.
This session, Selling Safety in Your Organization, introduces participants to three key components of selling safety:
- Vision – communicating the “why” behind safety in a way that connects with employees.
- Knowledge – blending technical credibility with practical application.
- Heart – making safety personal by showing genuine care for employees’ well-being.
Through stories from my experience as an hourly employee, supervisor, and safety professional, attendees will see how these components apply in real-world scenarios. They’ll also learn how to have a “Make Safety Personal” conversation—an approach that connects with employees at a personal level to inspire commitment beyond compliance. A practical worksheet will be provided to help participants apply this technique immediately.
The goal is to equip attendees with tools to:
- Strengthen credibility by combining technical expertise with soft skills.
- Influence employees to embrace safety as a shared value, not just a requirement.
- Create a culture where employees proactively identify and address hazards.
Technical knowledge may open the door to the profession, but combining it with soft skills creates actual effectiveness. By learning to sell safety, leaders can move beyond compliance and foster a culture where employees are engaged, proactive, and invested in working safely.
This session will equip attendees with actionable skills to influence change, foster stronger connections within the workforce, and contribute to shaping a culture of safety that endures.
