Topic Safety in the Movies: Making it Look Dangerous

How many times have we as safety professionals said, “If it doesn’t look safe, it isn’t”?  A notable exception exists to that rule.  Sometimes it has to look dangerous and be safe.

The highest grossing movies at the box office these days are full of death-defying chases, car-crashes, explosions, and other heart-stopping action scenes. Rick Kain – Stunt Coordinator, Stuntman, Actor and award-winning film maker, will talk about making the magic happen while ensuring cast, crew and all involved go home after the director yells “cut!”.  He will be joined by Cheryl Scanlon-Zinner to discuss how they worked together on a recent Netflix production.

Speakers

Rick Kain is a 22-year veteran of the film and television industry working both in front of the camera as an actor and stuntman, and behind the camera as a stunt coordinator, director, cinematographer, and producer, with over 160 credits to date. His most recent work can be seen on ‘Glass’, ‘Wonder Woman-1984’, ‘Quantico’, Mindhunter, Jack Ryan, and the independent film projects ‘Sollers Point’, ‘Fishbowl’, and ‘D.C. Noir’. His short films ‘Final Notice’ and ‘The Tracker’ have completed their festival runs and he has just completed post on the short films ‘The Elephant Spiel’ and ‘Unheard Melodies’, and just began postproduction on a feature length documentary. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, WIFV,TIVA. He served as the Vice Chair of the SAG-AFTRA National Stunt and Safety Committee for six years, and SAGAFTRA Mid-Atlantic regional board.

While working as a contractor for Ellis Fall Safety Solutions, Cheryl had the opportunity to provide fall protection planning and support on a movie production. On that shoot, she and Rick were tasked with keeping acting talent, stunt performers and the crew safe on the roof of a 38-story building in Baltimore.
