PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear ASSP Members,

With the holiday season and New Year quickly approaching, now is the time to take a moment to reflect on 2020. The year may not have looked as expected but there are so many things to be grateful for. We all worked diligently to ensure employee safety during uncertain times and we all came together to do our part. ASSP Philadelphia has experienced all-time highs in participation and seen lots of new faces. Thank you all for engaging with our community and staying involved!

brittany_1664303.jpgIf you have not already engaged with our team and members here in the ASSP Philadelphia community, 2021 is your chance to reinvigorate that effort.  We encourage our members to get involved in volunteer opportunities that can any fit any time commitment. The executive board within the ASSP Philadelphia chapter has been hard at work minimize webinar fatigue through developing interactive and meaningful content. We are proud to announce our upcoming meeting schedule.

Our members will have these great events to look forward to:

  • January 21, 2021: Attorney Adele Abrams- Medical Marijuana and Legalized Recreational Marijuana
  • February 18, 2021: Joint meeting with AIHA- Ergonomics at Home and in the Workplace
  • March 2021: Joint meeting with Penn-Jersey Chapter

I want to take a moment to mention the “Member-Get-A-Member” Program.  This program empowers us to bring in new membership to ASSP and keep our mission growing!  By referring new members to ASSP, you can be rewarded with free Webinars, Memberships, and ASSP Apparel.  Additionally, there is a drawing for a free conference registration and accommodations.  To send an email to a colleague, with your own customized message and tracking code go to https://www.assp.org/membership/member-get-a-member

In the age of social media, instant communication and telecommuting, connection to a strong, live safety community has never been more important.  Your membership in the ASSP Philadelphia Chapter is a tremendous resource that can help you filter through the noise and keep you in touch with what’s really important.  Whether it is following us on our social media platforms (LinkedIn or Facebook), attending our monthly events, or becoming involved in a subcommittee or leadership role, you have the power to decide your level of engagement.  Why look any further than this community of safety professionals - right here in your backyard - to support your professional and personal development!

I encourage each of our 500+ members to look at their schedules and find the time to become involved. I am excited to see what this chapter’s leadership will achieve as we continue to build off the success from last year’s team.  Finally, as we start to make our plans and book out the calendar, we want to assure all of our members that the executive committee is dedicated to making your membership experience the best it can be!

Have you ever thought about getting more involved with ASSP? What a better way to take advantage of your membership and the benefits it provides than to be on the team who guides the chapter? These opportunities can spur career growth and ultimately lead to better job opportunities. We strongly encourage you to become more involved in our community of over 500 safety professionals who lead, manage, supervise, research and consult on safety around the area and beyond. Take advantage of a wide range of benefits available to our ASSP members and become a chapter leader.  Email assp.philly@gmail.com to learn more!

ASSP National has been regularly updating their COVID-19 webpage, providing the latest resources to assist members, their employers and their clients with re-opening as safely as possible.  Some highlights include:

  • A COVID-19 community discussion to ask for advice and share your experience with other front-line safety professionals.
  • Webinars, podcasts and articles on various aspects of COVID-19.
  • Links to COVD-19 resources from a number of other governmental and professional organizations.

Hello everyone, I hope that you enjoyed listening to some of the Safety Podcasts we shared in our last Journal.  Maybe you found some other great podcasts you enjoy.  I want to explore some other unique way to stay motivated and current as a safety professional.

You Tube – Yes, that’s right safety professionals, the web site where we find videos of people doing some really unsafe stuff at work also has some great content.  Thinking of becoming a CSP?  Look for reputable content from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).  Does your workplace handle Hydrogen Sulfide?  Check out the Five Minutes Safety video on H2S.  Looking for a compelling story about incidents and injuries in your industry, the Chemical Safety Board has animations and video content to describe accidents and lessons learned which you can apply to your workplace to make it safer.

LinkedIn – Do you follow any consultants or companies on LinkedIn?  Companies often post free webinars, white papers and videos.  ASSP Philadelphia member Pat Karol, Karol Safety Consulting, has some fun videos to help learn about safety culture and being a better safety leader - He’s a pretty good actor too!   Are you following our ASSP Philadelphia LinkedIn page?  Get the latest newsletters, webinar signups and scholarship opportunities!

Cell Phone Aps – There are many apps right in the palm of your hand to help you at work.  Is this work area too loud?  Screen the noise level with the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app.  Does that ladder look right?  Check the 4:1 ratio with CDC’s Ladder Safety App.  Do you think it’s pretty hot and time for a water break?  Download the OSHA NIOSH Heat Safety Tool.  There are too many apps to name with Toolbox and Safety Meeting talks to list here!
